How much is VAT in New Zealand?

VAT (Value-Added Tax) is a consumption tax levied on most goods and services sold in New Zealand. The current standard VAT rate is 15%. Some items, such as financial services, are exempt from VAT, or are subject to a reduced rate of 12.5%.

If you are registered for GST, you can claim back the GST paid on purchases you have made for your business. You do this by including the GST amount in your GST return. To determine how much GST you can claim, multiply the purchase price by 3 (ie, 15% divided by 5).

For example, if you buy a computer for your business for $1,000, you can claim back $150 in GST.

If you are not registered for GST, you cannot claim back the GST paid on purchases.
